Desire under the skin

“Gemma, help me with these!” Jeneane had thrown her a bag full of apples while she gathered up our shoes.

“Hey! What are you thinking of doing with those?” I asked cautiously. I didn’t like it when Jeneane planned things. At the very least she’d throw them in the water.

“Who, me? Absolutely nothing!” she replied, with a disgusted expression at the smell of our shoes. “But take out all the laces and pretty please rinse them off in the stream before bringing them back to me.”

“What do you have in mind?” Gemma asked, her vague smile mixed with worry.

“We could eat the grapes off the girls’ naked bodies,” proposed Brandon, suddenly fascinated by the idea.

“In your dreams,” replied Jeneane.

“Whatever it is, I’m not so sure I want to participate,” murmured Gemma, startling me.

“Don’t be a party pooper!” Jeneane complained.

“We all know you want to go off in a corner and read that stupid book, but we’re all here to have fun,” Brandon admonished her, noting the displeasure in Jeneane’s voice as she tried to keep the group together.

“But I have fun with that stupid book.”

“Boring! Brandon’s right. You can’t back out now,” her friend cried. “You can always read your book later.”

“I didn’t say that was why I didn’t feel like playing. It’s just that I’m not sure of your intentions. And just so you know, the story I’m reading isn’t boring at all. You’d probably like it if you gave it a chance.”

“If it’s that good, they’ll make a movie out of it. I’ll wait to see it then.”

“The book is always better than the movie. Why do I even bother explaining this to you? Just seeing the movie is like just reading a summary of a story.”

“So what? I always do that in class.” Jeneane shrugged.

Gemma shook her head. “Plus, you’ll miss the best part of the day if you don’t play games with all of us. It’s nothing indecent, you know.”

“All right.” It seemed Gemma had been convinced. “But only if we don’t end up naked in the water,” she warned and I laughed, remembering the last time Jeneane had proposed a game and we really had all ended up naked in the water.

“No one will end up naked in the water,” Jeneane reassured her, but then surrendered to the laughter she’d been holding back. “Okay, maybe someone will, but I promise it won’t be you.”

I didn’t want to end up naked in the water either. I should have explained my intentions to Jeneane and gotten her cooperation. I was sure she would have accepted my request with secret enthusiasm.

Jeneane had a real talent for organization. At school she was involved in lots of activities. I suspected it was so that she could make the rules. Even now she’d taken matters into her own hands and was organizing everything for the next game, though Brandon continually derailed her with his provocations, attempting to pull her close. Though she refused him, her giggles were an invitation to keep trying.
